Dementia Care
The specialist Dementia Nursing, Day Care and Home Care services at Horsfall House are delivered by a highly-trained team of people who are passionate and respectful about the wellbeing and dignity of the people they support.
- Our primary focus is to provide specialised care which is person-centred, promotes self-esteem, encourages independence and enables freedom of choice. We support family to remain included in the care of their loved ones at this new stage in their life
- Our qualified Dementia Link Workers bring to their role and to other staff a wealth of specialist dementia knowledge, experience and expertise. As well as caring for residents and clients their job is to supervise staff with their ongoing training
- Registered nurses, carers and activities coordinators undertake the most up to date dementia awareness training and are encouraged to maintain continuous development in this field. Regular supervision and appraisal of staff plus a range of other training create a person-centred environment for staff and in turn for the people for whom they care
- All staff including receptionists, catering, domestic, maintenance and gardening take pride in the relationships they develop with residents and clients as well as their relatives and friends
- A valued team of professional entertainers, therapists and volunteers help us to provide a wide range of enjoyment such as gentle Extend and Chi Gong exercise, reminiscence and Life History work, musical sessions including ‘Singing for the Brain’, art, craft-work, gardening, baking, and various complimentary therapies including therapeutic aromatherapy massage. There are many themed occasions such as Wimbledon and the street parties for the recent Royal Wedding. A number of Pets as Therapy (PAT) dogs visit regularly
- We help our residents and clients to maintain strong links with friends of all ages within the local community. Local schoolchildren perform throughout the year, in particular carols at Christmas-time. We hold regular concerts and poetry sessions within the dementia unit and day centre to which members of the local community are invited
- The homely environment throughout Horsfall House is designed to enable people to feel comfortable and familiar with their surroundings. For instance, it is well-known that strong colours such as red, yellow, orange and hot pink are more recognisable for people with dementia than more subtle shades in the colour spectrum. The furnishings, crockery, tableware, décor and bathroom facilities reflect this
- The gardens feature sensory qualities - bright colours, tactile and fragrant planting, wind-chimes, and a relaxing water feature with a pulsating rhythm similar to heart beat - which together create an equal balance of stimulation and relaxation
